Superior Motion Control, designed and manufactured this custom electromechanical linear servo actuator to be used to control a thermostatic control valve to heat and cool the Jamming Pod on the EA-18 Growler.

The custom mechanical design incorporates a brushless DC motor driving a 3 pass spur gear train and dual start ACME screw.

The self-contained custom electrical serial interface, servo control, motor drive electronics, firmware, and software were developed and tested by Superior.

Software was designed in accordance with DO-178. Valve positioning is accomplished by using the motor hall effect sensors as an incremental position encoder.

Software controls the initialization of the valve position upon power up.

As a product improvement for the C-17 Aircraft, Superior Motion Control won a competitive contract to design and manufacture a custom linear actuator that was more reliable and could operate at higher altitudes than the incumbent linear actuator.

This actuator has a brush type 28 VDC motor, a four stage spur gear train, a positive engagement tooth clutch, and a ballscrew powered ram.

The actuator also has a coil spring that drives it to extend, the locking direction, in the absence of electrical command.

Superior’s custom design shown passed Qualification Testing (environmental and EMI) and received flight certification.

Superior Motion Control, designed, manufactured and qualified this custom linear actuator replacing the incumbent resulting in a cost savings to Raytheon.

The custom designed linear actuator is connected to the Patriot Radar Rotary Gearbox via a flex shaft so the Radar Array for the Patriot Radar System can be raised and lowered.

This linear actuator passed accelerated life testing and Environmental Testing per MIL-STD-810.

The design consists of a gear train coupled to an ACME screw, there are position and load limit switches incorporated into the unit.

Superior Motion Control developed a custom designed linear actuator that is submersible to ocean depths of 1000 feet or approximately 400 psi.

This custom linear actuator is oil filled with an external pressure compensator to equalize the pressure as the vehicle depth changes. The design incorporates a ACME screw, brushless DC motor , and custom electronics.

The communication is based on EIA RS-485 serial interface. The communications bus can address up to 16 different actuator.

The baud rate is 115.2KBPS so that a laptop can be used for testing purposes.

Used on an aircraft for sensor deployment and to open and close the fuselage to lower a camera. The actuator consists of a brush motor, gear train and precision screw and nut.

Superior was contracted to not only design and build am aircraft linear electromechanical actuator, but also to determine with and for the customer the operating and application requirements.

By Superior participating in and leading the pre-design and build activities, cost and schedule economies were achieved.

Superior modified a design used for Raytheon’s AQS20 vehicle to control the flaps on an aircraft. The actuator has a brushless DC motor with a brake is driving a 3 stage spur gear train connected to a ball screw generating linear motion.

A Potentiometer is directly coupled to ball screw for position feedback.
